Arne Slot has revealed why he paid tribute to Jurgen Klopp during his title celebrations at Anfield on Sunday.

After months of hoping and dreaming, Liverpool finally secured the Premier League title on Sunday courtesy of a 5-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield.

The Reds needed just a point to guarantee that they would be crowned champions of the 2024/25 Premier League season.

But despite falling behind early in the game, they produced one of their best performances of the season in front of an emotional Anfield crowd to secure another huge win over Ange Postecoglou’s side.

With that win, Liverpool are now officially the biggest club in England, having equalled Manchester United’s tally of 20 league titles.

In winning the league, Slot became just the fifth boss in Premier League history to win the crown in their debut season in the competition.

However, during the title celebrations, the Dutchman took time to celebrate his predecessor, Klopp.

Klopp had welcomed Slot to Liverpool with a song during his farewell speech in his last game as Liverpool coach at Anfield.

Less than a year later, Slot repaid his kind gesture by paying homage to Klopp.

“It feels great.

The only thing now is to send my appreciation to Jurgen Klopp,” the Liverpool coach told LFCTV post-match, before launching into a rendition of the song Klopp asked Liverpool fans to sing after his final game last May, but replaced the lyrics ‘Arne Slot’ with ‘Jurgen Klopp’.

Speaking to the media later in the evening, Slot revealed why he took the time to thank Klopp.

“Because of what he did when I arrived here, before I even arrived here.

The quality the players have was I think obvious for everyone.”

“But the culture of hardwork, not only from the players but also from the staff members have been incredible and that is one of the reasons why we could achieve what we’ve achieved this season.”

“So for obvious reasons, I think it was a nice moment to thank him as well.”

The 46-year-old also revealed that he has always been in contact with Klopp, and that it was certain that the former coach would have texted him a congratulatory message.

“I am 99.9% sure that if I pick up my phone, there will be a message from Jurgen,” he told BBC Match of the Day.

“So many moments in the season, the two of us have had contact?

I think he showed last season what a wonderful human being he is by introducing me.

“But what mattered most is the team he left behind that was able to win the trophy.”

Klopp expected to be at Liverpool

Klopp is expected to be in Liverpool for the LFC Foundation’s Gala Ball on Friday, May 23, at Liverpool Anglican Cathedral.

He is likely to join players and fans at Anfield for Liverpool’s final game of the season against Crystal Palace.

The former coach also revealed that he plans to join the title parade, which is scheduled for Monday, May 26th.
